Signature Candle Care | Medium & Large Candles

A Little Care Goes a Long Way

Beautiful candles deserve beautiful care. Just a few seconds before lighting can make all the difference.

Extending the Life of Your Candle with a Clean Burn

Trim your wick to approximately 3–5 mm before every burn, including the very first.

Our specially selected HTP wicks naturally curl as they burn, helping reduce carbon buildup and support a clean, even flame.

That little curl is also a handy reminder to trim your wick! Once your candle has cooled, simply trim away the curved or flared tip, leaving approximately 3–5 mm ready for your next burn.

A properly maintained SJ Energy Candle should leave the inside of your vessel free from heavy black soot.

The First Burn Matters

The first burn helps prevent tunnelling, where wax builds up around the sides while the candle burns down the centre.

Allow the melted wax to spread towards the edges of the vessel, giving your candle the best start for an even burn.

Recommended Burn Times

Medium Candles — 2 to 3 Hours

Allow approximately 2–3 hours per burn, particularly on the first burn, to help the wax reach the edges.

Large Candles — 2 to 4 Hours

Allow at least two hours for the first burn. Larger candles may take longer to develop an even melt pool.

Never exceed four hours per burn. Always allow the wax to cool and completely solidify before relighting.

Candle Care Q&A

Why Is My Candle burning black soot?

SJ Energy Candles are designed for a beautifully clean burn. If you're noticing black soot inside your vessel, check these two things:

1. Is your wick too long?

A long wick can create a larger flame and black soot. Extinguish your candle, let it cool completely and trim the wick to approximately 3 - 5 mm.

2. Is your candle sitting in a draught?

Fans, air conditioning and open windows can cause the flame to flicker or lean, affecting how cleanly your candle burns.

A properly trimmed wick and a calm, steady flame make all the difference. If excessive sooting continues, discontinue use.

What If My Candle Starts Tunnelling?

Tunnelling occurs when your candle burns down the centre, leaving unused wax around the sides.

There is a way to gently redistribute excess wax using the small scoop from your candle care kit, helping you enjoy more of your candle rather than letting that beautiful wax go to waste.

I'll be adding a short demonstration video here soon to show you how it's done.

Important Reminders

Always burn your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts, children, pets and flammable materials.

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep the wax free from debris and never move a candle while the wax is hot or liquid.

Discontinue use if the vessel is damaged, and stop burning before the flame reaches the base of the vessel.

Make a little time for yourself. Make it feel like home.
