Materials + Care
Signature Candle Care | Medium & Large Candles
A Little Care Goes a Long Way
Beautiful candles deserve beautiful care. Just a few seconds before lighting can make all the difference.
Extending the Life of Your Candle with a Clean Burn
Trim your wick to approximately 3–5 mm before every burn, including the very first.
Our specially selected HTP wicks naturally curl as they burn, helping reduce carbon buildup and support a clean, even flame.
That little curl is also a handy reminder to trim your wick! Once your candle has cooled, simply trim away the curved or flared tip, leaving approximately 3–5 mm ready for your next burn.
A properly maintained SJ Energy Candle should leave the inside of your vessel free from heavy black soot.
The First Burn Matters
The first burn helps prevent tunnelling, where wax builds up around the sides while the candle burns down the centre.
Allow the melted wax to spread towards the edges of the vessel, giving your candle the best start for an even burn.
Recommended Burn Times
Medium Candles — 2 to 3 Hours
Allow approximately 2–3 hours per burn, particularly on the first burn, to help the wax reach the edges.
Large Candles — 2 to 4 Hours
Allow at least two hours for the first burn. Larger candles may take longer to develop an even melt pool.
Never exceed four hours per burn. Always allow the wax to cool and completely solidify before relighting.
Candle Care Q&A
Why Is My Candle burning black soot?
SJ Energy Candles are designed for a beautifully clean burn. If you're noticing black soot inside your vessel, check these two things:
1. Is your wick too long?
A long wick can create a larger flame and black soot. Extinguish your candle, let it cool completely and trim the wick to approximately 3 - 5 mm.
2. Is your candle sitting in a draught?
Fans, air conditioning and open windows can cause the flame to flicker or lean, affecting how cleanly your candle burns.
A properly trimmed wick and a calm, steady flame make all the difference. If excessive sooting continues, discontinue use.
What If My Candle Starts Tunnelling?
Tunnelling occurs when your candle burns down the centre, leaving unused wax around the sides.
There is a way to gently redistribute excess wax using the small scoop from your candle care kit, helping you enjoy more of your candle rather than letting that beautiful wax go to waste.
I'll be adding a short demonstration video here soon to show you how it's done.
Important Reminders
Always burn your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts, children, pets and flammable materials.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep the wax free from debris and never move a candle while the wax is hot or liquid.
Discontinue use if the vessel is damaged, and stop burning before the flame reaches the base of the vessel.
Make a little time for yourself. Make it feel like home.

The Welcome Home Ritual | Candle Care
A Little Care Goes a Long Way
Your Welcome Home Ritual petite candles are lovingly hand-poured in Australia using a premium blend of pure soy and coconut wax with cotton wicks.
Designed for shorter, intentional moments, each candle brings warmth and beautiful fragrance into your home.
Just a few seconds to trim your wick before lighting makes all the difference.
The Secret to a Beautifully Clean Burn
Trim your wick. Every single time. Including the first.
SJ Energy Candles are carefully crafted to deliver a beautifully clean burn.
When burning correctly, the inside of your glass should remain free from black soot, although a faint grey residue may occasionally appear.
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to approximately 3–5 mm, including before the very first burn.
Your Welcome Home Ritual includes a wick trimmer to make this simple.
The Perfect Little Burn
Your petite candles are designed to be enjoyed in shorter sessions.
Allow the melted wax to reach the edges of the glass, which usually takes approximately 20 minutes.
Never burn your petite candle for longer than one hour at a time.
This helps preserve the life of your candle and reduces excessive heat buildup in the glass.
Let Your Candle Rest
Once you've extinguished the flame, allow the wax to cool and completely solidify before lighting it again.
This gives your candle time to reset before its next beautiful moment.
Why Is My Candle Leaving Black Marks?
A properly maintained SJ Energy Candle should not leave heavy black soot inside the glass.
If you notice black marks, there are two important things to check.
1. Your wick may be too long.
A wick that's too long can create a larger flame and produce black soot.
Extinguish your candle, allow it to cool completely, then trim the wick to approximately 3–5 mm before relighting.
2. Your candle may be sitting in a draught.
Air conditioning, fans, open windows and passing breezes can cause the flame to lean, flicker and burn unevenly.
Move your candle to a sheltered, stable, heat-resistant surface before relighting.
A calm, steady flame is what you're looking for. If excessive smoking or soot continues after these adjustments, extinguish the candle and discontinue use.
A Few Important Reminders
Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, children, pets and flammable materials.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep the melted wax free from wick trimmings, matches and other debris.
Never move your candle while the wax is hot or liquid.
Discontinue use if the glass becomes cracked or damaged, and never rely on the wick to extinguish itself.
Make a little time for yourself. Make it feel like home.
